    Middle chamber- TMC 30L

Heya. I currently only have the sponges that came with the tank in the middle chamber and some rowaphos in between them. Do I need to have more in there? I keep reading about filter floss and power pads and things and I'm wondering if I'm maybe missing out here!

id ditch the sponges to be honest mate, they are a nuisance once they populate with bacteria, you'll get a build up of nitrates which will upset corals and feed nuisance algae.
Just use some floss and the rowa in a filter sock, and rely on liverock for filtration

Do you literally just grab a handful of filter floss and stick it in the chamber? Might have to get some off eBay then! What does the carbon do?

Carbon is used as a final polisher to improve water clarity. Due to the way its made it has a hyge surface area that has a charge, this attracts and locks in pollutants, you do have to change it quite frequently as it can exhaust quite quickly.

About The Nano Reef

You can ask questions, debate different techniques, chat to other members and generally join in the fun. We aim to be the centre of excellence and the ultimate resource for all things Nano/Pico.

Whilst we mainly cater for tanks with display volumes less than 55 gallons, you will be sure of a warm welcome if you have a bigger tank. Nano tanks are gaining in popularity, but not just because they are an entry into the hobby. Many experienced and successful reefers are turning to Nano tanks either as an addition to a larger tank, or more often, instead of. Nano tanks are easier to maintain and cheaper to run, but more importantly they provide a much more intimate experience and a personal relationship with the various inhabitants and symbiotic relationships that exist in reef environments.
